Clearwater, Florida Offshore Fishing

Clearwater sits on Florida's central Gulf Coast, with the wide West Florida Shelf extending over 100 miles before reaching the shelf break. This wide, shallow shelf creates a different offshore fishery than the northern Gulf — the focus here is on the exceptional live-bottom habitat, natural ledges, and the Florida Middle Grounds, a 700-square-mile area of coral and rocky pinnacles roughly 80 miles offshore. The Middle Grounds harbor some of the most diverse marine life in the Gulf, including giant gag grouper, red grouper, and pelagic visitors. While blue water is a long run, the shelf itself offers world-class bottom fishing and seasonal pelagic opportunities when the Loop Current pushes warm water onto the shelf.

Gag grouper are the premier offshore target, with the shallow-water season (June through December) producing fish on nearshore ledges and the deeper Middle Grounds holding gags year-round. Red grouper are available on live-bottom habitat across the shelf, with peak action in spring and summer. King mackerel run heavily in spring and fall along the beach and near-shore reefs. Cobia migrate through from March through May, often found around buoys, rays, and channel markers. When the Loop Current pushes close, mahi-mahi and wahoo appear along current edges and temperature breaks, typically 60 to 80 miles out. Permit are caught on wrecks and deep ledges throughout summer.

The wide West Florida Shelf makes SST interpretation different here than in the northern Gulf. Rather than looking for canyon edges, you are watching for Loop Current intrusions that push warm, clear water onto the shelf from the southwest. These intrusions are visible on SST charts as tongues of warmer water extending northeast across the shelf. When this happens, the normally green shelf water clears up significantly, improving visibility and often triggering pelagic species to push inshore. For bottom fishing, SST stability matters — rapid temperature swings from upwelling events can shut down the grouper bite. Chlorophyll charts help identify the most productive live-bottom areas.
