Ocean City, Maryland is the undisputed White Marlin Capital of the World, home to the legendary White Marlin Open and a fleet that has chased billfish for generations. Situated at the mouth of the Ocean City Inlet, the port provides direct access to Washington Canyon and Baltimore Canyon, two of the most productive submarine canyons in the Western Atlantic. The run to the shelf edge is roughly 60 to 75 miles, with Baltimore Canyon sitting east-southeast and Washington Canyon to the south-southeast. The canyon system here is massive — Baltimore Canyon alone drops from 300 feet to over 6,000 feet, creating a nutrient upwelling engine that draws bait and gamefish from June through November.

White marlin fishing peaks from July through September, with the best action along the 50 to 100-fathom curve when Gulf Stream water pushes into the canyon heads. The annual White Marlin Open in August draws hundreds of boats targeting these fish along temperature breaks near Baltimore Canyon. Yellowfin tuna show up in June and remain through October, with fish from 30 to over 100 pounds feeding on the canyon edges. Bigeye tuna are a fall specialty, with September and October producing the best deep-drop and nighttime chunk bites along the 100-fathom line. Blue marlin appear in July and August, typically in the warmest water east of the canyon rim. Swordfishing has exploded in recent years, with daytime deep-drop techniques producing fish from the canyon walls at 1,200 to 1,800 feet.

The most productive setups occur when a tongue of 75-plus-degree water pushes into the head of Baltimore Canyon, creating a defined color change from green to blue along the 50 to 100-fathom curve. Watch for surface temperature gradients of 4 degrees or more over short distances — these sharp breaks are where white marlin stack up. Current rips, visible on satellite imagery as linear features along temperature breaks, are prime trolling lines. When the Gulf Stream sits far offshore, look for warm-core eddies that maintain fishable water temperatures over the canyon structure.
