Islamorada Offshore Fishing

Islamorada bills itself as the Sportfishing Capital of the World, and the offshore fishing justifies the claim. Sitting in the upper Keys, Islamorada offers quick runs to deep water on the Atlantic side and access to the famous Islamorada Hump — a deepwater seamount that rises from 1,100 feet to around 480 feet, concentrating pelagics and deep-water species in a relatively compact zone. The reef line here is well-developed, with Alligator Reef and Tennessee Reef providing structure that funnels bait offshore. Sailfish dominate the winter bite from November through March, with Islamorada's annual sailfish tournament circuit drawing the best captains in the fleet. Swordfish are targeted on the deep drops around the Hump year-round, with daytime techniques producing fish in 1,400-1,800 feet. The spring mahi run from March through June is prolific, with fish stacking under floating debris and sargassum mats. Wahoo bite best from October through December along the 100-fathom curve. Blackfin tuna school over the Hump and along current edges nearly year-round.
