Matagorda, Texas Offshore Fishing

Matagorda sits where the Colorado River meets Matagorda Bay, with the Matagorda Ship Channel and the old Colorado River mouth providing Gulf access. This quiet fishing town on the upper-mid Texas coast flies under the radar compared to Galveston and Port Aransas, but its offshore waters are among the most productive on the Texas shelf. The platform complex offshore of Matagorda is dense, with rig clusters stretching from close-in shallow water to the shelf edge at roughly 55 to 65 miles. The combination of productive bay systems feeding bait into the Gulf and a well-spaced rig complex creates an offshore fishery that rewards local knowledge and careful trip planning.

Red snapper are the backbone of Matagorda's offshore fishery, with the platform complex holding strong populations from spring through fall. King mackerel peak in spring and fall, working the rig lines and near-shore hard bottom. Cobia arrive in March and stage around platforms and buoys through May, with excellent sight-fishing opportunities on calm days. Ling (cobia) around deep platforms are a local specialty. Amberjack hold on deeper rigs year-round, with spring and fall peak action. For blue water targets, yellowfin tuna are available at the shelf break from June through September when warm-core eddies cooperate, and mahi-mahi show up along current rips and weedlines in summer.

Matagorda's SST charts reflect the Colorado River discharge and Matagorda Bay outflow, which creates a variable nearshore temperature and salinity signature. On satellite imagery, look for the boundary where this bay-influenced water gives way to cleaner Gulf water — this transition zone typically falls 15 to 25 miles offshore and marks where offshore bait concentrations build. The platform complex from this line outward tends to fish best. At the shelf break, warm-core eddies drifting westward from the Loop Current are the key driver. SST charts showing a warm anomaly approaching the shelf between Freeport and Port O'Connor signal a window for blue water runs from Matagorda.
